What good modernisation protects

A modernisation that goes well preserves what matters while removing what holds you back. Four things have to be managed carefully.

Step 1

Business continuity

The work the old system supports must keep running throughout, so we modernise in stages, never big-bang.

Step 2

Data integrity

Careful, validated data migration so nothing is lost or corrupted in the move.

Step 3

Right approach

An honest choice between refactor, re-platform and rebuild, based on cost, risk and the real goal.

Step 4

Knowledge capture

Documenting what the old system really does so hard-won logic is not lost in translation.

Legacy software rarely fails all at once. It gets slower, riskier and more expensive to change until it quietly caps what the business can do. Anviam modernises the systems you depend on, migrating, re-platforming or rebuilding them cloud-native, in stages that keep the business running throughout.

Application modernisation is a judgement call as much as an engineering one. The right answer might be a careful refactor, a lift-and-shift to the cloud, or a full cloud-native rebuild, and choosing wrongly wastes money either way. We assess honestly and pick the lowest-risk path that actually solves your problem.

Whether you are fighting rising hosting costs, a shrinking pool of people who understand the old system, mounting security risk, or simply the inability to ship changes fast enough, we give you software that is cheaper to run, easier to change and ready for the next decade.

Assessing the legacy system honestly

Modernisation starts with understanding what you actually have: what the system does, what it is worth, where the cost and risk live, and which parts are business-critical versus rarely touched. Much of the real behaviour of a legacy system is undocumented and lives in a few people's heads, so capturing it is the first job.

From that assessment we recommend a path and are candid about the trade-offs. Sometimes the right answer is to leave part of a system alone and modernise around it. We would rather tell you that than sell you a rebuild you do not need.

  • Legacy system audit
  • Cost, risk & value analysis
  • Business-logic discovery
  • Dependency & integration mapping
  • Refactor vs re-platform vs rebuild
  • Honest, prioritised recommendations

Cloud migration and re-platforming

Moving a system to the cloud can cut hosting costs, improve reliability and unlock scaling that on-premise hardware never could. We migrate and re-platform applications to AWS, Azure and GCP, choosing the services that fit your real traffic and budget rather than the biggest invoice, and automating the infrastructure so it is reproducible and cheaper to run.

Where a straight lift-and-shift makes sense as a first step, we do that to stop the bleeding quickly, then optimise. Where more value comes from re-architecting as we move, we plan that in stages. The path is chosen to deliver benefit early, not in a year.

  • Migration to AWS, Azure & GCP
  • Lift-and-shift then optimise
  • Infrastructure as code
  • Cloud cost optimisation
  • Improved reliability & scaling
  • Reduced hosting overhead

Cloud-native rebuilds and re-architecture

When a system is too tangled to refactor economically, a cloud-native rebuild gives you a clean, modern foundation. We rebuild on current technology with sensible architecture, breaking an unwieldy monolith into services where that genuinely helps, so the new system is faster, more reliable and far easier to change.

We preserve the behaviour that matters and the data that must survive, while shedding the accumulated cruft of years. Crucially, we do this in slices rather than all at once, replacing the old system piece by piece so you are never betting the business on a single switch-over.

  • Cloud-native rebuilds
  • Monolith to microservices (where it helps)
  • Modern, supported technology
  • Behaviour & data preserved
  • Incremental replacement
  • Easier, faster future changes

Safe data migration

The data in a legacy system is often its most valuable asset, and the riskiest part of any move. We plan migrations carefully: mapping and cleaning the data, validating it against the source, running trial migrations, and reconciling records so you can prove nothing was lost or altered.

We favour approaches that let old and new run in parallel during the transition, so you can verify the new system against reality before committing. Data migration done carelessly is how modernisation projects fail, so we treat it with the caution it deserves.

  • Data mapping & cleansing
  • Trial & dry-run migrations
  • Source-to-target validation
  • Record reconciliation
  • Parallel-running transition
  • Rollback safety

Phased rollout that keeps you running

The biggest risk in modernisation is downtime and disruption to a system people rely on. We eliminate the big-bang gamble by delivering in phases: replace a module, prove it in production, move on. Often we run the old and new systems side by side until the new one has earned trust.

This phased approach spreads risk, delivers value early, and lets your team adapt gradually rather than all at once. Change management and training are part of the plan, not an afterthought, so the people using the system are ready when each phase lands.

  • Phased, module-by-module rollout
  • Parallel running & safe cut-over
  • Early, incremental value
  • Rollback at every stage
  • Change management & training
  • Minimal disruption to operations

Who application modernisation is for

We modernise for businesses facing rising costs or reliability problems with ageing systems, for those where only a handful of people still understand the old code, and for teams blocked from shipping changes fast enough to compete. If your software is shaping your decisions instead of supporting them, modernisation is overdue.

We work across regulated and complex sectors and are comfortable with old technology stacks and sparse documentation. The goal is always the same: software that costs less, breaks less and changes more easily.

  • Businesses with rising legacy costs
  • Systems only a few people understand
  • Teams blocked from shipping changes
  • Security or compliance risk in old software
  • Companies moving to the cloud
  • Organisations replacing end-of-life tech

Why modernisation is worth it

Ageing software is a slow, compounding tax on the business: higher hosting bills, slower changes and growing risk. Modernisation turns that around.

Lower Cost

cloud migration and optimisation cut hosting and maintenance overhead

Phased

module-by-module rollout so the business never stops running

Safe Data

validated, reconciled migration with parallel running and rollback

Faster Change

modern architecture so new features ship in days, not months

How we modernise applications

  1. 01

    Assess

We audit the system, map dependencies, and surface the real cost, risk and business logic.

  2. 02

    Choose the path

We recommend refactor, re-platform or rebuild, with honest trade-offs and a phased plan.

  3. 03

    Plan migration

We design the data migration and the order in which modules move, with rollback at each step.

  4. 04

    Modernise in phases

We migrate or rebuild module by module, proving each in production before moving on.

  5. 05

    Migrate data safely

We run validated, reconciled data migrations, often with old and new in parallel.

  6. 06

    Optimise & support

We tune cost and performance, then maintain the modernised system on agreed SLAs.

Frequently asked questions

Should we refactor, re-platform or rebuild?

It depends on the system's condition, value and your goals. Refactoring suits code that is sound but dated; re-platforming suits systems that mainly need a better home, such as the cloud; a rebuild suits systems too tangled to change economically. We assess honestly and recommend the lowest-risk path that actually solves your problem, not the biggest project.

How do you avoid downtime during modernisation?

We never do big-bang switch-overs for systems you depend on. We modernise in phases, replacing one module at a time and proving each in production, and we usually run the old and new systems in parallel until the new one has earned trust. The business keeps running throughout.

Is our data safe during migration?

Yes, and we treat it as the riskiest part of any project. We map and cleanse the data, run trial migrations, validate the result against the source, reconcile records, and keep rollback available. Parallel running lets you verify the new system against reality before committing.

What if nobody here fully understands the old system?

That is common and we plan for it. Part of our assessment is business-logic discovery: working out what the system really does, including the undocumented behaviour, before we change anything. We capture that knowledge in documentation so it is not lost in the move.

Will modernisation reduce our running costs?

Often significantly. Moving to the cloud with right-sized services and infrastructure as code typically cuts hosting and maintenance overhead, and a cleaner architecture reduces the cost and risk of every future change. We quantify the expected savings as part of the assessment.

Can you modernise part of a system and leave the rest?

Yes, and sometimes that is the right call. We can modernise the parts causing the most cost or risk and integrate cleanly with what stays, rather than rebuilding things that work fine. We will tell you honestly where leaving something alone is the better decision.

How long does a modernisation project take?

It varies with scope, but phased delivery means you get real benefit from early phases well before the whole project is done. We agree clear milestones up front and report progress transparently, so you are never waiting a year to see value.

Do you support the system after modernisation?

Yes. We offer ongoing maintenance and support with agreed SLAs, covering monitoring, security patching, fixes and enhancements, so your modernised system stays current and keeps delivering rather than drifting back toward legacy.
