The four layers of a BI platform

A dashboard is only the surface. Reliable business intelligence rests on four layers working together, and weakness in any one undermines the rest.

Step 1

Connected data

Every relevant source, from your CRM and finance system to your product database, brought together reliably.

Step 2

Trusted model

A semantic layer where metrics are defined once, so revenue means the same thing to everyone.

Step 3

Clear dashboards

Visuals built around real questions and decisions, not every chart a tool can draw.

Step 4

Self-service

Governed access so teams explore and answer their own questions without waiting on analysts.

Business intelligence is the practice of turning your raw data into clear, trusted dashboards and reports that drive decisions. As a UK BI partner, Anviam connects your systems, models the numbers once so everyone works from the same figures, and builds the visualisations that let leaders and teams see what is happening and act on it.

The problem is rarely a shortage of data. It is that the data sits in silos, the reports disagree with each other, and getting an answer means waiting on an overstretched analyst. We fix that with a proper semantic layer and self-service dashboards, so the numbers are consistent and anyone can find the answer they need.

Whether you need your first dashboard, a migration off legacy reports, or embedded analytics inside your own product, we build a BI layer around how your organisation actually works, in Power BI, Tableau or Looker, so reporting finally earns its keep.

What business intelligence is and why it matters

Business intelligence takes the data your systems already produce and turns it into something a human can act on: a dashboard, a KPI, a report that updates on its own. It answers the practical questions that run a business, which products are growing, where margin is leaking, which customers are at risk, without anyone exporting spreadsheets at midnight.

The value is speed and trust. When the numbers are consistent and current, meetings stop being arguments about whose figures are right and start being decisions. BI is what lets a growing organisation keep a grip on performance as the volume of data outpaces the people trying to read it.

  • KPI and executive dashboards
  • Operational and departmental reporting
  • A single, agreed source of truth
  • Automated, scheduled refreshes
  • Drill-down from summary to detail
  • Alerts on the metrics that matter

Power BI, Tableau and Looker development

We build in the tool that fits your stack and your team, not the one we happen to prefer. Power BI suits organisations already in the Microsoft ecosystem, Tableau excels at rich visual exploration, and Looker and Looker Studio fit cloud-first and Google-centric teams. We are fluent across all three and will recommend the one that serves you best.

Whichever platform you choose, we design dashboards that are fast, readable and built around the decisions they support. Clean layouts, sensible defaults, consistent definitions and performance that holds up as your data grows, so people trust the dashboard enough to run the business from it.

  • Power BI reports and workspaces
  • Tableau dashboards and workbooks
  • Looker and Looker Studio builds
  • Performance tuning for large datasets
  • Mobile and embedded views
  • Row-level security and access control

Data modelling and the single source of truth

Most reporting disagreements come from the same cause: everyone calculates the metric differently. We solve that with a semantic model that defines each KPI once, so active customers, net revenue and churn mean exactly the same thing in every report. That shared definition is what makes a dashboard trustworthy.

We model your data for the questions you ask, build clean relationships between sources, and document the logic so it is transparent rather than locked in one person's head. The payoff is a reporting layer that stays reliable as you add sources, users and complexity.

  • Semantic and metrics layers
  • Consistent KPI definitions
  • Star-schema and dimensional modelling
  • Documented business logic
  • Reusable datasets across reports
  • Governed metric catalogue

Self-service analytics and data culture

A BI platform only pays off when people use it. We set up governed self-service so teams can slice, filter and explore the data themselves, within guard rails that keep the numbers correct and sensitive data protected. That frees your analysts from ad-hoc requests to work on the questions that need real thought.

We pair the build with enablement: clear dashboards, sensible naming, and short training so non-technical staff feel confident. The aim is a data culture where answers are a click away and decisions are routinely backed by evidence.

  • Governed self-service workspaces
  • Role-based access and permissions
  • Certified datasets and reports
  • User training and enablement
  • Report catalogues and documentation
  • Adoption monitoring

Embedded analytics and automated reporting

If you sell software, analytics inside your product can be a feature customers pay for. We embed dashboards and reports directly into web apps and portals, matched to your brand and secured per tenant, so your users get insight without leaving your product.

For internal use, we automate the reporting that still eats hours: scheduled refreshes, reports delivered to inboxes, and alerts when a metric crosses a threshold. The manual export-and-email cycle disappears, and people get the number when it matters rather than a week later.

  • Embedded dashboards in your product
  • Multi-tenant, per-customer security
  • White-labelled analytics
  • Scheduled report delivery
  • Threshold and anomaly alerts
  • API-driven data refreshes

Who business intelligence is for

BI pays off for any organisation whose data has outgrown spreadsheets: a finance team consolidating numbers by hand, a sales leader with no clear pipeline view, operations chasing updates across tools, or a board that wants one reliable scorecard. If decisions are being made on stale or conflicting numbers, BI is the fix.

We work across sectors, from fintech and retail to healthcare and manufacturing, tailoring the metrics, governance and compliance to each. The underlying discipline is the same, but the KPIs and the sensitivity of the data differ, and we build for both.

  • Finance and management reporting
  • Sales and marketing performance
  • Operations and supply-chain visibility
  • Product and customer analytics
  • Board and investor reporting
  • Regulated-sector dashboards

Frequently asked questions

Which BI tool should we use, Power BI, Tableau or Looker?

It depends on your stack and team. Power BI is the natural fit if you already use Microsoft 365 and Azure, Tableau is strong for rich visual exploration, and Looker or Looker Studio suit Google and cloud-first teams. We are fluent in all three and recommend based on your systems, budget and the skills in your team, not a vendor preference.

How long does it take to build a dashboard?

A focused first dashboard on reasonably clean data can be live in two to four weeks. The timeline depends mostly on the state of your data and how many sources need connecting. We prioritise a useful first dashboard early, then extend from there rather than waiting months for a big-bang launch.

Can you connect all our different systems?

Yes. We routinely pull data from CRMs, finance and ERP systems, databases, spreadsheets, marketing platforms and APIs into one place. Where systems lack a clean connection, our data engineering team builds the pipeline to bridge the gap, so your BI runs on complete, current data.

What is a single source of truth and why does it matter?

It means every report calculates each metric from the same agreed definition and data, so revenue or active customers means the same thing everywhere. It matters because it ends the common problem of two reports showing different numbers, which destroys trust in reporting and slows decisions.

Do we need a data warehouse before we can do BI?

Not always. For smaller, simpler setups a dashboard can connect to sources directly. But as data volume and the number of sources grow, a warehouse makes BI far faster and more reliable. We will tell you honestly whether you need one yet, and build it if you do.

Can our team maintain the dashboards themselves?

Yes, that is usually the goal. We build with governed self-service and train your team so they can explore data and build their own views within safe guard rails. We can also provide ongoing support for the more complex work if you prefer to keep your team focused elsewhere.

Can you embed analytics inside our own software product?

Yes. We embed branded, secure dashboards directly into web apps and customer portals, with per-tenant security so each customer sees only their own data. Embedded analytics can become a paid feature that adds real value to your product.

How much does business intelligence cost?

It varies with the number of sources, the complexity of your data and whether you need a warehouse underneath. After a short discovery call we give you a clear, fixed-scope proposal. Most clients start with a focused first project and expand once they see the value, rather than committing to everything at once.
